Behind the Stacks

I’m currently in the middle of four books. I finished all my A.J. Jacobs books (the one on the constitution, the one on his relatives, the one on puzzles and the one of random experiments he conducts on himself, like “total honesty”). With audio books, I am zooming through stories like Sorry I’m Late, I Didn’t Want to Come and Post Traumatic Chruch Syndrome. That leaves me with these four books which I am to finish on vacation.

  • No Stopping Us Now by Gail Collins. I’m still on this book, somewhere in the 1930s to be exact. If you thought it was hard for a man with a family to find work, imagine what it was like to be an older woman (or even more difficult an older woman of color). In some cases mothers would have to move in with their grown children, whether they were warmly.welcome or not. It was not an easy time to be elderly. It was not an easy time at all.

  • The Library Thief by Kuchenga Shenie. This was a selection for my book club (it got chosen from a paper bag). I’ve only read the first chapter but already I like it. It’s about a woman who arrives to Rose Hall to restore some of the books in the extensive library. But the woman (Florence) has secrets…..and the library does also

  • The Goodbye Summer by Patricia Gaffney. I once read a book of Ms. Gaffney’s while I was in prison, I mean the hospital and I really enjoyed it. I started reading this book out loud to my mom and we both found it funny and entertaining so that’s what I’ll be reading to Mom on vacation.

  • Baby Catcher: Chronicles of a Modern Midwife. I’m only about fifteen pages into this book but I love it. I love her stories about the mothers and the babies. When she started as a  midwife it was late 1950s and things were so different back then. For example, doctors would get African American women under a fog of anesthesia then had them sign a form agreeing to sterilization. In another story, the author did a well visit on a baby and then saw how many babies there were (many), how many girls there were (several) and how many men lived there (one father).

I do intend to do other things except read but let’s face it…..isn’t that what vacation is for?
