Finding Gratitude for the Common Complaint

“It’s Too Cold”

It might be cold out but at least I have a warm coat, shoes that don’t have holes in them and a nice bed in a heated house to boot

“My stomach/ head hurts”

I know you’re in pain. Try to make yourself comfortable. Put down your pen and lie on your stomach. Get a heating pad or Tylenol if needed

“No one likes me”My life is actually very rich. I have a lovely family, friends and good poetry community. Even in my darkest hour I have always had people looking out for me

“I’m tired”

Because you are on medication that makes you sleepy. Take some time for yourself. Don’t be afraid to take a nap or close your eyes. You don’t have to be productive every minute”

Finding gratitude amid health problems:

Remember the things your body can do. Run, swim, jump. Remember you can do so much. You have medication to help you otherwise you might be chained to a wall or found in a padded cell. You might not be your best right now, you might be struggling with side effects. But you are free. Thank God for that.

Finding gratitude when someone you love dies

I loved having my Aunt Rosemary, She was so giving and living. She would read to me at night when I got sleepy at family gatherings. I miss her so much but I know she is no longer in pain. And I know one day I’ll see her again.

“My boobs aren’t the right size”

“My boobs are a little heavier than most and I don’t want to be with a boy who thinks about my boobs alone (or his dad. Yup that has happened).

“I’m fat”

You are a little overweight but so many beautiful people are overweight and considered attractive. Don’t be the one to bodyshame yourself.

“He doesn’t like me”

He’s working/sleeping/busy. He’s got a life besides me and that’s a good thing. He never goes more than a day without a response. Find something to distract you from your phone.

“I have no friends”

So what about all the friends who rushed to comfort me when I cried at the slam? And come to my parties and tell me what a great friend I am. You are appreciated. Your friendship matters.
