Trap: An M Night Shyamalan Movie

The serial killer straightens the bathroom towel and I immediately know he has OCD. Most serial killers do in the movies at least (I have no idea of the link between this insidious disease and murder in real life anyway). But in the movies, a mental disorder (or two. Or three) spices things up and that’s what we are going for: chills, not accuracy. As the FBI agent explains the male is White, in his forties, with a case of OCD—anything to sensationalize a disorder that Is already misunderstood. I’m doing my best to distill mental health rumors but it’s just movies like Trap that instigate it further. Hey, I mean if you are crazy enough to straighten the bathroom towel you are crazy enough to do anything….am I right?

I just saw M. Night Shayamalan’s latest movie yesterday. It’s about a concert that is set up as a trap to find a serial killer called the Butcher. It’s told through the killer’s eyes as he tries to get himself and his teenage daughter out without being detained. The killer in question didn’t seem all that interesting which is probably why they had to spice it up with “quirks”, including crippling diseases such as OCD. Or maybe they were trying to humanize him. If so they didn’t do a good job. I only I felt even more contemptuous of him.

Overall the movie was a letdown . Using OCD as a plot device (albeit a small one) just made things worse. Truly this is a movie you can skip.
