Weird and Wacky Facts About the 1970s

The 1970s saw the rise of disco music. Some people love disco while others can’t stand it. In music class in middle school, we all had to write a paper on a genre of music. I picked disco and I learned doing research about people having sex in discotheques. I was scandalized.
Microsoft was founded in 1975. Apple was hot on it’s heels in 1976. I remember when my family got our first computer. I must have been six or seven. I wrote a story about my cousins and I living at our farmhouse where we discovered a mysterious room. I printed out the story and I still have it. Even then I knew I wanted to be a writer.
With 107 acres and 5,500 employees Walt Disney opened up in 1971. I went to Disney World when I was about four. Police officers got a discount after 9/11 so we could afford it (although I didn’t know that at the time). I was thrilled to see all my favorite princesses and of course, Winnie the Pooh.
A CBS show “Bridget Loves Bernie” caused controversy due to it featuring an interfaith couple. Imagine the scandal some of today’s shows would cause: Toddlers and Tiaras, Sister Wives and Skins.
Workout equipment at home became popular. We have a rickety old stationary bike downstairs that I liked to play on as a kid but never wanted to work out on.
Punk subculture emerged and I couldn’t be happier. I wear my leather jacket with pride.
Porn also got popular especially a movie Deep Throat which got attention from mainstream audiences as well. It earned 3 million dollars during the first six months.
The first pride celebration was held in June 1970. It has seriously come a long way when you think about all the pride parades and celebrations exploding across the country every June.
The Sony portable music player was released in the 70’s. I remember when my parents got me an MP3 player for Christmas and my dad spent the next three hours downloading all the Beatles songs onto it. Now if I’m not talking to someone, Sportify is in my ear.
“The Match of the Century” was chess game that pit America’s Bobby Fischer against Soviet Boris Spassky. America was victorious (very satisfying).
