Weird and Wacky Fun Facts of the 90s

I was a 90s kid technically. But I was born in the later part of the decade so I don't remember any trends or news beyond my own small world. Here are some things other 90s kids might remember though:
Friends, which is now one of my favorite shows, was a 90’s sitcom featuring six friends living in New York City. One of these characters, Rachel (played by Jennifer Anniston) had an iconic haircut that apparently Anniston hated. It’s hard to believe because she looked so good.
Hilary Clinton was a bitch. I never liked her. But she was on 60 Minutes discussing her husband’s infidelity (yeah he’s a real prince too) and she said “I’m not sitting here like some little woman standing by my man like Tammy Wyette” I’m not sure why Tammy Wyette warranted this attack. And anyway, isn’t that exactly what Hilary Clintonn did?
The book Who Moved My Cheese? became popular in China. It is a self-help book that spawned others such as Whose Cheese Should I Move? and No One Can Move My Cheese. Which as is funny because, as Mental Floss pointed out, cheese isn’t big in Chinese cuisine. I’d more expect something like Who Misplaced My Dumpling?
People liked to wear chokers in the 1990s. Maybe they did not know the history behind the accessory. For example it was worn during t he French Revolution to pay tribute to those executed. In the 1800s it could be used to signal prostitution.
Doc Martens became popular again. I have never worn Doc Martens for the simple reason I think they are bulky and ugly. However, other girls (and boys) can pull them off. I think I’m just too small for them.
NC-17 became a movie rating. The first movie to receive was Henry and June which was a biography revolving around a love triangle that had more sexual content, nudity, and violence than an R rated movie would have. Other movies with NC-17 ratings include Shame, Blonde and a Serbian Film. For the love of God please don’t watch A Serbian FIlm.
Slap bracelets were popular. I remember slap bracelets. We would wear them up and down our arms and trade them in between classes. We did this in elementary school though not high school. As if the teachers at my private Catholic school would have stood for that!
The guy who said “You Got Mail” when my dad logged onto his email was a man named Elwood Edwards. I feel like I kind of know him.
Back to Friends. The theme song “I’ll Be There For You” was written by t he Rembrandts and reached #17 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was apparently their only hit but I really liked “A House is Not a Home” as well. I even created a story around that song about a family who has to turn their house into a boarding house.
One of my favorite “crime” movies is Silence of the Lamb where Anthony Hopkins does an excellent job as Hannibal Lector. He said the “voice” he used as Hannibal Lector was a combination of Truman Capote and Katherine Hepburn. Odd. But it works.
