I was never an Avengers fan. And I let my boyfriend know this, straight up. Nevertheless I’ve seen my fair share of Marvel movies, the last being Madame Web which was amusing in how bad it was. But the other day as Justin and I played with LEGOs he put on the animated X-Men series. And I was hooked. We watched the whole thing. For some reason I found the X-Men more likeable and genuine than the Avengers. Or is it that I haven’t given superheros enough of a chance? (I love Batman and the Watchmen). Like it or not superheroes have been and will be part of our pop culture. Here are my top five favorite X-Men. What are yours?

1. Beast. As my boyfriend says, Beast is an intellectual. He quotes prolific authors and philosophers all the time and he enjoys reading (upside-down). When he is captured and in jail (for basically nothing) Magneto tries to free him but Beast prefers to wait for his day in court even though he could easily bend the bars of his cell. Oh yeah and he’s covered in

blue fur.

2. I love Rogue because she has so much emotional baggage. She can’t physically touch anyone (not without her gloves) without absorbing their own feelings and that really fucks with her mind. Imagine not being able to be intimate with anyone, unable to kiss the one you love. Plus she looks hot, talks fast and can fly. So why wouldn’t you like her?

3. Storm is pretty cool because she can control the weather. Conjure up thunderbolts, create windstorms, manipulate the cold. But she also has a weakness. Storm is extremely claustrophobic. I really like how the X-Men have more well, relatable weaknesses than say, Kryptonite. Plus Storm assumes a caregiver role which I like.

4. Gambit: the flirt with the deck of cards. He’s probably the one I’d fall for first before settling on a more suitable match. You can’t deny he is impressive: turning playing cards into a weapon. He’s slick but I still ship him and Rogue together. I think she can whip him  into shape.

5. Jean. When I asked my boyfriend who was the most powerful of the X-Men, he quickly responded “Jean. No question” Her powers include telekinesis and telepathy. I don’t see how anyone can fight that (but I’m sure that they will/have created formidable enemies for the future).

My boyfriend told me a new X-Men series is coming out at the end of March. It’ll be rated TV14 so say goodbye to kid friendly language and simple story plots……but I intend to watch it anyway.
