How did you spend your summers?
I worked. Ages 16-`8 I was a counselor for the three to four olds with cancer (we called them Acorns). The kids could be hard (I loved them anyway) but the worst were the hottest days (we were in the sun almost the entire time) and the time I got poison ivy in my eyes. Then I worked retail which is indoors but your feet still kill.
What was your highest academic achievement?
I got As in two really hard classes (Logic Education and Geometry) I also got a 5.0 in Psychology because he graded on a curve.
How were you able to do that?
I worked incredibly hard in college. I put my study time before all else and still managed to balance my time. I read the textbooks, took notes on post its and made index cards online using quizlet to quiz myself.
What teachers, bosses or other mentors influenced you and how?
I didn’t really get familiar with my professors but my supervisor at work, Rachel, really guided me. I had trouble with disciplining my campers and she modeled good techniques. I also loved her enthusiasm with the kids and how she wasn’t afraid to make mistakes.
What do you wish they had taught you in school?
How to do taxes. Insurance. How to recognize bipolar disorder. That psychosis can be a symptom of bipolar 1. How to calm down from a panic attack. How to cook. How to drink responsibly.
What did you learn in the school of hard knocks?
I learned in a mental institution there is no privacy. You will have to shit and shower in front of other women. I learned that while there are nurses and techs, you are essentially on your own and must watch yourself.
What lessons about managing money, creating a social life, and staying on track at work came easily?Creating a social life has always come easy to me even if I’m in a mental hospital or work environment. I met my best friend in the first hour of arriving at college.
When, if ever, did you spend money unwisely, bounce a check, miss something important because you overslept, or otherwise made unwise moves?
Not usually. I really fucked up my commitments during junior year but I was manic. My money and sleep schedules are something I really protect (I have to).
