Social media has spread like a virus from the newest generation to people of my parents age (both my parents have Facebook accounts. My dad’s is for music, my mom’s is for cookies). Even my brother has one though he barely uses it. Facebook is considered a bit passe now with more people getting Instagrams, Snapchats and, of course, Tiktoks. I grew up with Facebook. I was fifteen when my friends made an account for me. I can’t remember if I was allowed to or not; they just did it like they were doing  me a favor. But for the majority of my high school career I was locked out of my Facebook and cringing at my original posts, that was probably a good thing. I only Snapchatted with guys. That’s not to say I sent nudes to guys but it was a great way to flirt without leaving an evidence trail. I didn’t even try Tiktok. I’d get lost there. So let’s start this off with some trusty facts from AI.

              AI Statistics

  • 63.9% of the world’s population uses social media. Sometimes I wonder if people in third world countries have social media. Some countries are lacking in clean water and medical help. Do they have social media?

  • The average daily use of social media is 2 hours and 20 minutes. That is staggering to me. I’m always trying to use Twitter to promote my blog and my books (without much luck) but other than I’d say I use social media a half hour at most. At most. Which is a generous estimate.

  • Facebook is still the most dominant platform with 3.07 billion monthly active users

  • Youtube follows Facebook with 2.5 billion monthly active users. I always forget Youtube is a social media platform even though back in the day I made Youtube videos that were painful to rewatch because you could see how nervous I was even though in my opinion the content was worth watching especially if you are interested in books.

  • Instagram is third with 2 billion monthly active users. I used to post more on Instagram when I would wear sexy clothes. These were bathroom or changing room selfies. Forgive me. I was twenty.

  • Whatsapp is also 2 billion monthly active users but I can’t comment on Whatsapp because I know nothing about it.

  • An average social media user uses 6.83 different social networks per month. I’m not even sure I know six social networks. I do know a knitting social media site I recently joined called Ravalry.

My Top Reasons For Using Social Media

  1. Keeping in touch with family and friends (I love seeing what my college friends are up to)

  2. Avoiding missing out on things (FOMO).  I have a very bad case of FOMO. If I could split myself into three I would so I’d be able to go to more parties, slams, sleepovers. But as it is I feel myself spread too thin

  3. Work related investigating or research (case in point)

  4. Making new contacts

  5. Finding inspiration for things to do and buy (and read)

That concludes Statistics week. The numbers didn’t indicate this was a success but I had fun and learned a lot so I guess that’s a win. I try not to make my blog all about me even though it is my blog. I’m not that fascinating, I just happen to have two common illnesses that people can relate with and learn about. And I guess that’s why people stick around (I do have loyal readers). And I just want to thank you for that.
