Some things school should teach:

how to balance a checkbook
what grieving is like
the classics (some schools do, some don't)
sign language (as a language option)
writing a term paper
current events
how to swim (if there's a pool)
host a mock poetry slam
putting together your own Ted Talk
calculating bills with large groups at restaurants
how to make a Youtube video
the stock market

Because I went to a good school (public 1-8, private high school, Jesuit University) I was actually taught most of this stuff. Still have no clue how to balance a checkbook but I wrote a killer term paper, discussed current events and did a Ted Talk on OCD. I even took a class in high school called On Death and Dying which outlined the stages of grief. Some of this stuff I have never seen in a school like learning sign language but I feel like it could be easily implemented. Of course the basics (like reading and writing and even math) need to be addressed first. And in many schools that isn't happening. I know I am extremely privileged to have received the education I got. Sadly, it's a fact that the items I listed in this post will never see the light of day in many schools because many students receive the bare minimum when it comes to education. At least for the foreseeable future.
