Top Ten Fears of Americans

I always thought that the number one fear was public speaking which is why they make us do so much of it in school. But according to Chapman University, a group known as Team Fear has conducted a survey that reveals the true fears of Americans. Here it is as follows:

  1. Corrupt Government Officials

We have such a steady run of corrupt officials in the past few decades. I don’t like to discuss politics on my blog because I want everyone to feel welcome and I don’t want there to be conflict. All are welcome here. It’s called being tolerant.

  1. People I Love Becoming Seriously Ill

I have watched very close family members become close. Some of them have recovered, some have not. To care for someone who is critically or terminally ill is very difficult. It  involves sitting by their hospital bed, holding their hand, maybe offering them Sprite through a straw if they ask for it. I remember when my Aunt Rosemary was very sick my Uncle Hugh took care of her so attentively and tenderly. He would come over when I was sitting with  my aunt and try to get me to go take a break and get something to eat. I liked to whisper to my aunt what was going on around her (was is a game of cards? Was my dad playing the mandolin?). During the funeral I did a reading. It stopped me from breaking down completely.

  1. Economic/ financial collapse

I don’t do my own finances (my parents take care of me) but I can see this being a very bad thing. I can see how  it could lead to an increase of crime and violence and an increase in government corruption (and we are back to number one. See how all these fears are embedded in one another?)

  1. Cyber terrorism.

I’m surprised cyber terrorism made the list but (spoiler alert) regular terrorism hasn’t. Every time the fire alarm goes off in a movie (you might think that is rare but it has happened twice to me in the past six months) I am convinced it is an active shooter and not someone smoking marijuana in the bathroom and ruining the fun for everyone. I suppose I would hear gunshots if it was an active shooter but still. I was five when 9/11 happened but my dad was working in the city as a NYPD officer and he was running all over the place, too busy to even call my mom and let her know he wasn’t dead. My town is pretty close to the city and many people here lost family or knew friends that went to work that day never to return. Terrorism is a pretty scary thing.

  1. People I Love Dying

Well I already mentioned my Aunt Rosemary but several years ago one of my friends took his own life. This was the opposite of my Aunt Rosemary’s death. It came out of absolutely nowhere. I was surfing Facebook and I found a post regarding his death. This was about six months after my own suicide attempt and i was confused about why I had survived and he hadn’t. This has not been revealed to me yet.

  1. U.S. Becoming Involved in Another War

Well, I guess this fear became a reality.

  1. Pollution  of Drinking Water

I thought we had developed things that could unpollute/ purify water. That people used when camping or surviving in the wilderness? Why can’t we just use that?  I obviously don’t know anything about the environment.

  1. Russia Using Nuclear Weapons

This might be my top fear on this list. Russia is so dangerous. They are very unpredictable, greedy and ruthless. Putin doesn’t care who he kills. It is wise to have this fear. It’s also  very annoying.

  1. Pollution of Oceans, Rivers and Lakes

It is not in my top ten but we definitely need to preserve this beautiful planet that has been given to us.

  1. Government Tracking of Personal Data

This one only concerns me if they plan to release it to the public. I’d rather my parents not know my search history.

This list was from 2025 and its only March 2026 so I have to imagine that not much has changed (except for the fact that yes now we are in a war). I will say all of these are big concerns and concerns we should have should we want to keep our country free and our planet healthy. Stay tuned for tomorrow where I will discuss my own top ten fears.
