Merry Christmas!!! Yes, I am aware that not all my readers celebrate Christmas and to them I say I hope you had a happy holiday and a happy New Year. But for the rest of us,  here are some Christmas statistics to ponder as we soak in the festive activities and anticipate the big day.

  • 91% of Americans celebrate Christmas including those who are not tied to a faith or even those who belong to other faiths. I think they are just in it for presents personally. That and the food.

  • 25% of holiday shopping occurs online. Justin and I went to the mall a few days ago and there was no mall traffic clogging up the street. I thought going to the mall so close before Christmas was insanity but  getting in and out was a breeze. Which is kind of sad.

  • Most Christmas shoppers start in October. I start my crafting in the early days of September. Today I added the finishing touches.

  • In the U.S., three billion Christmas cards are sent annually. Do you send Christmas cards?

  • Jingle Bells was the first song to broadcast from space

  • In December 2022, a poll found that adults expected to feel more stressed this season compared to last year’s (2021). This was attributed to being able to buy holiday gifts, Younger adults were more likely to worry.

  • 90% of those who answered a national survey wish the holidays were less materialistic. (an increase from 78% in 2005). I have a unique perspective on materialism. I feel like the holiday is only as materialistic as you allow it to be. If it bothers you so much don’t buy presents and tell your family and friends not to get you anything. Or go the extra mile and make something homemade

  • 25-30 million real trees are sold each year. My family has always gotten a real tree. Barring the one that had a crooked spine which fell over scaring the shit out of my cats and breaking a bunch of ornaments we’ve always got gems

  • “In a survey of American women in 2021, 46% reported they’d be thrilled to get a weekend break or a holiday, 42% said they’d be happy to receive some credit at their favorite shop, and 36% would love a handmade present.” (simplifytheholidays.org) I’d love a holiday break, a gift card to a spa or a  homemade present. The only two people who give me homemade presents on a consistent basis are my brother who is an amazing artist and my cousin Mary who manages to make personal gifts for every single person in the house. This year Justin is making a homemade present (I know what it is but you won’t at least not for a few more days).

  • In accordance to the Christmas Coronary Effect, heart attacks and cardiac arrests peak around this holiday, probably due to so much rich food and drink.

Anyway, here’s hoping you don’t have a heart attack and here’s wishing you a Merry Christmas.
